Last month I spent a beautiful evening with Lauren and her family at her mom’s waterfront home in Guilford, Connecticut. Little did I know that a perfectly sunbathed staircase, old family stories, and raw emotion would help create some of the most intimate photos I’ve ever taken. I am forever grateful to Lauren and her family for opening up their doors and hearts to me. They wholeheartedly leaned into my process, and their photos show. These photos from their sunbathed in-home family photography session show the magic that is made when clients put their full trust in my creative process, start to finish.
When you first hire a professional photographer, it’s important that you need to establish a connection, build trust, and collaborate with an open mind. Lauren and I first connected via FaceTime a few months before her family session. Before jumping into a family photo contract we made sure we were a good fit for one another by chatting through my philosophy, her vision, and how they would come together. Once our connection was established, we were able to really see one another, better understand each other’s wants and needs. Thus, communication from there on out was easy and free flowing. Every piece of information I sent Lauren was fully read, filled out, and/or absorbed and as a result all parties involved were on the same page with the same expectations. All of the above set a beautifully strong foundation for the family photoshoot. It was a true dream for a family photographer.
To me, documentary images will always hold more emotional power and beauty when they are taken somewhere, or while doing something, that is special to the family I’m photographing. Lauren took that advice and ran with it, all the way to home plate when she chose to have her photos taken at her mom’s house on the rocky shoreline of Guilford, CT. While renovating their own home, Lauren and her husband Bret lived at her mom’s home while Lauren was pregnant with her daughter – a sacred time for any mother pregnant with their first child. The waterfront home had the dreamiest light that paired perfectly with the home’s sentimental value. Especially the staircase that was sunbathed in the most whimsical way.
Thank you to Lauren and her family. Thank you to Lauren’s mom who so graciously opened the doors to her beautiful coastal home. I loved every minute of this documentary photoshoot. I left with the biggest smile on my face, in disbelief that this is indeed my job.
